Bone mineral density as a prognostic factor for curve progression in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a longitudinal validation study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methods A cohort of 60 patients with a mean age of 12.6 years old (SD=0.8) and an average Cobb angle of 21.4 (SD=6.3) degrees were followed from their first visit till skeletal maturity defined as Risser 4 or above and greater than 1.5 years postmenarchal. Progressive curves were defined as a cumulative increase of 6 degrees or more in the Cobb angle, or the magnitude of any curve exceeding 45 degrees or the patients receiving surgery recommendation before or at skeletal maturity. BMD was measured with Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry of bilateral femoral necks at the first visit. Other anthropometric measurements such as body weight, body height and Tanner staging were also recorded at baseline.

Prognostic Value of Bone Mineral Density on Curve Progression: A Longitudinal Cohort Study of 513 Girls with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis
Osteopenia has been found to occur in about 30% of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) patients. This study aimed to investigate its prognostic value on the risk of curve progression to surgical threshold. Newly diagnosed AIS girls (N = 513) with Cobb angle 10°-40° were recruited with follow-up till maturity. Bilateral hips were assessed with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Distal rad...

Objectives AIS was associated with low bone mass which, apart from being an important health issue that could persist into adulthood, was also a significant prognostic factor for curve progression in AIS. We have performed a randomized controlled trial on WBV and reported its effect on increasing femoral neck areal bone mineral density (aBMD) mainly at the dominant leg but less obviously at the...
متن کاملAssociation between vitamin D serum levels and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
Background Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a deformity of the spine that occurs in up to 4% of children during childhood and adolescence. Idiopathic scoliosis is considered multifactorial, and family history may present several individuals affected. We still cannot determine which curves will worsen and at what rate, but some factors, such as age, growth potential and skeletal maturity have been a...

Background: Several studies have suggested higher incidence of osteoporosis in patients with idiopathic scoliosis in comparison with the normal population. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of low bone mass among adolescent girls with idiopathic scoliosis. Methods: In this cross-sectional study performed in shafa Hospital in Tehran, Iran during 2011-2012, we recruited fifty-seve...
متن کاملBody composition in males with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a case–control study with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry
BACKGROUND In contrast to the well-characterized body growth and development of females with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), the pubertal growth pattern of male patients has not been well-documented. Recently, significantly lower body weight (BW) and body mass index (BMI) were reported in males with AIS, and were thought to be related to curve progression. A case-control study was carrie...
